The Annual Dru Sjodin Purple Elephant Walk/Run is coming up this Saturday (8/13/22) in Pequot Lakes and the public is invited to participate in whatever way they see fit.
The event was established in 2007 and created to raise awareness about violence against women and children, as sadly, Dru herself was abducted in North Dakota and murdered in November 2003 by a registered sex offender. Her body was discovered in April of 2004 near Crookston, Minnesota where the murderer lived.
The funds raised from this important event will go towards bringing RadKids to the Pequot Lakes area. RadKids provides educational tools and resources that enhance the ability of children, parents and families to utilize knowledge, skills and power to protect themselves from violence and harm. According to Race Director, Margaret Flategraff, it was Dru’s mom, Linda Walker’s dream to see a RadKids program in the Pequot Lakes area, as Dru was a native of Pequot Lakes and attended Pequot Lakes High School before attending the University of North Dakota.
It is the hope of organizers that this event will not only raise awareness and funds in the fight against violence toward women and children, but will also be a meaningful and fun way to remember Dru.
The Purple Elephant Walk/Run 10K will start at 9:00, the 5K starts at 9:10 and the 1K will follow the last finishers of the 10K and 5K.
The earlier you sign up, the lower the entry fee. To register for the race, OR to just make a donation to the cause, go online to the event’s website (the link is below) or go to Facebook and search The Dru Sjodin Purple Elephant (link). Flategraff said the Purple Elephant Run is named after a tattoo that Dru had of a purple elephant.
