Another signature fundraising event here in the lakes Area has been cancelled in this year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 Good Sam Bowl, originally scheduled for May 3-4 has officially been cancelled.
The event was first postponed with the idea it could be held this fall, but as with all events that bring together a large gathering of people, the organizers decided it would be best to cancel this year’s event in the interest of safety.
WJJY and Hubbard Radio have sponsored a team in the Good Sam Bowl every year since it started 16 years ago. Although our bowling skills never improved in all those years, the event grew into the largest fundraising event in the nation for the Good Samaritan Society.
The event raised money for a number of specific items over the years, and recently the Good Sam Bowl was used to provide general funding. Even though the event is cancelled, the need still exists, as explained in this portion of the press release announcing the cancellation:
The Good Samaritan Bowl has provided critical support for the well-being of Brainerd-area seniors for 16 years. The Society is asking that community members consider making a gift to the Good Samaritan Bowl fund, which will help residents at the Bethany and Woodland locations to live everyday more fully. To make a gift, please visit the secure online giving page at good-sam.com/goodsambowl.
The Good Sam Bowl brought together children from area schools, bowlers representing businesses and non-profits, community leaders, and seniors from Bethany for a day of camaraderie, bowling, and so much more.
It’s time we all come together again virtually, to help our seniors. I encourage everyone who has ever bowled in this event to make a contribution to the Good Sam website and support this worthwhile cause.
