Check out this view of Mille Lacs from atop the observation tower at Kathio State Park.
The small island, just off Indian Point, is Rainbow Island.
We spent the 4th of July just kickin’ back and doing a little exploring at Kathio, on the SW side of Mille Lacs. I’d suggest that you consider spending some time at this beautiful park if you’re looking for a relaxing getaway. You’ll have your choice of camper cabins, rustic campsites and sites that come complete with electricity.
Kathio is a National Landmark District where archaeologists have found evidence of human activity stretching back some 9000 years and where humans like us can get back to nature and forget about those day to day concerns for a while. The trails at Kathio are plentiful and well maintained, some more challenging than others. And, the Rum River runs through it. The Rum makes a meandering run from it’s headwaters at Mille Lacs, all the way to Anoka where it flows into the Mississippi. Boats, canoes and kayaks are available for rent.
It’s OK to be curious when you take in the sights at Kathio. Just ask those DNR folks and other park personnel and they’ll have an answer. What’s that flower? What’s that bug? They’re a friendly bunch and they know their stuff.
We had a great time and you will too. Take a little time out of your life, forget your worries and your strife. Get together with some folks you know and visit Mille Lac’s Kathio State Park.
