Man Steals Police Vehicle In Grand Forks, Dies Crashing Into Semi On I-29

After stealing a patrol car in Grand Forks, North Dakota, 33-year-old Jordan Lee Poitra passed away after crashing into a semi on Interstate 29.

A video on Facebook went viral Monday of a man stealing a police vehicle in the parking lot of a Dollar Tree in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Shortly afterwards, the man, now known as Poitra, turned north onto Interstate 29. After a short distance on the interstate, Poitra then angled towards the west, crossing the median and “striking a southbound semi tractor-trailer in nearly a head-on collision. The collision left the semi disabled and partially off the roadway, the patrol vehicle destroyed, and Mr. Poitra deceased. There was no active pursuit at any point during this incident.” according to a press release from the Grand Forks Police Department. According to the Grand Forks Herald, the driver of the semi is ok but shaken up. 

Also in the press release are the details behind the original altercation between Poitra and police. Police were called to the Dollar Tree parking lot just after 5 pm on Monday regarding a male with an unknown problem. After learning about an warrent out for his arrest, police attempted to arrest Poitra. Poitra eventually got away from police and stole the patrol car.
