What first started as a joke of a tweet is now a number one hit. Weezer released their music video for ‘Africa’ and Weird Al Yankovic is right in the mix.

Weezer’s first number one hit since 2008 now has a music video. The song, which was originally released by Toto back in 1982, is now a major hit again in 2018. No, I’m being serious.

It all started when a twitter account named @weezerafrica tweeted out to the band that “It’s about time you bless the rains down in Africa.”.

That led to Weezer teasing with a cover of the other popular Toto song ‘Rosanna’. But then two days later, Weezer did release a their own version of ‘Africa’ and it took off in a big way. Since it’s release, the song shot up to number one on the iTunes singles chart. The song took on a life of it’s own, and Weezer had Weird Al Yankovic do a surprise cameo during a show over the summer for the song. It was so well received I guess Weezer wanted Yankovic to be the focal point of the music video. So Weird Al and a mock version of Weezer did the ‘Africa’ music video in the same setting as the music video for “The Sweater Song” with Yankovic taking the role of Weezer front man Rivers Cuomo.
